Correlation between microstructure and cyclic behavior of 316L stainless steel obtained by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

In this work, stainless steel 316L obtained by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) has been produced and characterized. The experimental campaign focuses on the samples in as-built state under cyclic tension-compression loadings. Low cycle fatigue (LCF) high (HCF) tests are carried out. Microstructure observations performed before after As-built L-PBF a good LCF performance despite presence of surface defects but low limit HCF regime. Removing roughness beneficial effect does not improve strength to that machined wrought 316L. Observations microstructure indicate is dominated local plastic deformation, which mostly achieved slip studied material sensitive defect. lack-of-fusion defect impairs resistance
